VBS Game Day Central Ideas and Pictures

I am the VBS director for our church and like many Southern Baptist churches, we are doing Game Day Central from Lifeway. I posted some hints on Lifeway's idea section about the lockers and the worship rally, and wanted to include it here in case anyone reading also is doing the same. If you have any questions about the pictures or materials, post a comment and I will respond.

The lockers are made with florist boxes and spray painted (very easy!).
The back drop is made with a drop cloth that was a cotton type material on the front and a plastic on back (no leakage!). We have them hanging on a PVC frame that is 6 feet tall with two 8 feet sides and one long 16 feet back. Our stage is quite large, but we only used 3 panels for the back drop. The "faces" were painted with a variety of mixed tempera paint and oval sponges. It looks great from the audience.

Love the locker idea.. how did you acquire the florist boxes? Thanks, Debra

We had a florist on our decorating committee that gave us the boxes. She said they get them with the flower deliveries.

Rebekah, im having trouble posting to this blog so i hope you dont get this more than once. i used your great idea for lockers but instead of florist boxes i used empty fabric bolts i got free at walmart. they are the perfect size to hang on a wall. i spray painted them metallic blue and waiting for that to dry to continue. thanks for the idea and the pix. That is a great idea for lockers on the wall. These actually stand up so you now have two choices! Thanks Debra.

Hello. I saw your pictures you posted on your website for gameday central-very cute! I have a quick question-how did you get the puppy dog and the boy catching the football so big? What are they made of? Also, is the game day central logo hanging in the back a poster you bought from lifeway just cutout? Thanks for your help!

I used the clip art from the decorating cd and made a transparency (your church secretary can probably do this or an office supply and some printers can be used with transparencies). Then we used an overhead and projected it onto the wall and traced it onto a piece of bulletin board paper. Then we painted it. We cut it out and used spray adhesive to stick it to foam board (you can buy it at a hardware store or builder store- it is used for insulation). Then cut that out with a knife or razor blade. Electric knives like you use for meat work too. We did this for all three.

I would appreciate any detailed instructions you have for the backdrop of people in the stadium.

First, one of my decorating ladies painted the blue curve and vertical blocks for the aisles of the stadium. She also included the square space where you would go out of the seating area. Then we did the faces. What we did was mix a variety of tempera paints using orange and yellow as the main color and added in some red, brown, black, and white to make the people different colors. Be careful with red, black, and brown- a little goes a long way and will completely discolor the entire batch. We mixed them on Styrofoam plates. We then cut a rectangular sponge into an oval and sponge painted the faces in a random pattern on the panel. We did more than one panel at a time. When we ran out of that color, we just made a new one. No batch was the same. From a distance, it gives a good effect. Even some of the people are greenish!

I actually have two different shots of the worship rally, send me your email (I won't post it) and I will send you those too- they are not much different, but a wider shot and a left side shot.

How did you get the florist boxes to stay together? I thought that the stage looked wonderful!!

Unknown said...

The boxes are two parts, a lid and a bottom. That part stayed together pretty good. Then we duck taped across the back. They were a little flimsy, but it made them easy to move.

I would love to make the stadium people but my problem is, I tried to use these dropclothes last year and when I put my paint on them it sucked all the paint from to cotton side to the plastic side. Did that happen with yours also???? Thanks Sandy

Unknown said...

No, we did not have that problem. I could not tell you if it was the amount of paint of the type of paint. Tempera paint (premixed) is pretty think and stayed put, unless we stepped in it!

A lot of people have asked about the paint bleeding. We did not have a problem with that on these back drops. We used premixed tempera paint (not the powder form) so it was pretty thick. And we used the sponge, so it went where we put it, and where we stepped in it! :)

I love your vbs decorations, but I would really like to know what the first two banners say that are behind the game day central sign.

Unknown said...

The banners are not for VBS they are for our Sunday school promotion plan. They were left up since it was only the associational training.

A answer on the frame for the backdrop...
We made the frame (I do not have a picture of just the frame) with pvc pipe. It was 6ft tall and in 8 ft wide sections to fit the backdrop. We have a large stage, so it was two 8 ft sections across the back and 2 8 ft sections forward (in an angle). For the support, we used a 3-4 ft "leg" going forward and zipped tied the sections together. All of it was connected with those pieces that connect pvc together.

Loved your locker idea. I found someone in my church that can get me florist boxes this weekend. Did you spray paint the boxes before or after you duct taped them together? Any other tips for the locker assembly? THANK YOU, THANK YOU for sharing your cute ideas!

We laid them out on the grass in the order and spray painted the tops and front of each and the sides of the ends (not all the sides to save paint). Then we moved them to church. Then we duck taped them.

One of our teachers made a football scene for her room and instead of spots for the prople she used magazines and old church directories and cut put faces. Some of youth helped and everyone enjoyed it and it looks cute. We even have the President and the first lady

That is a great idea!
